Grow your own Potatoes, March 2018

We have been so busy in Oak Class over the last few weeks, that we have not had the chance to plant our potatoes out.  Two very kind volunteers came into school early today to make sure that the seven potatoes were comfortably rehoused in their special polythene bags before the Easter holidays to give them the opportunity to get some growing done!  We shall be checking up on them regularly in the hope of a good crop later in the year.

Awful Auntie, March 2018

We have had a great time really getting to know the David Walliams' story, 'Awful Auntie', in lots of different ways.  Firstly, we took part in a special workshop where we did some acting around the characters in the story and then made puppets of these characters.  Then, we had a very exciting trip to the Northcott Theatre in Exeter to watch a production of the story.  It was fabulous!  Many thanks to the Art Show for providing the funds for these two events.

Fairtrade Conference, February 2018

We were invited to attend the Fairtrade Conference at Chudleigh School this week.  We joined pupils from other schools such as Dunsford, Teign and Chudleigh itself.  We met Victor and Esther, tea farmers from Kenya, who told us all about tea-growing, tea-picking and tea-processing in their country.  We also got to taste some tea and some special tea-cake.  We then learnt about how Fairtrade helps farmers in poorer countries in the world and started making plans for a Fairtrade assembly back at Doddi School.

Goodbye Mr Arnold, February 2018

Today, we sadly said goodbye to Mr Arnold who has been head here at Doddi for the last year and a half.  We held a surprise tea party for him in the school hall with lots of cake, the singing of a goodbye song and the recitation of a special poem written by the Key Stage 2 children.  We also gave him presents and cards, and wished him lots of luck for the future.

Class names chosen! February 2018

As we will be moving to two classes after half-term, we decided that it would be a great idea to have names for the new classes.  Today, we held a democratic vote to choose our favourite pair of names from a short list of 6.  It was a very close result with the winners being Acorn Class (for Key Stage 1) and Oak Class (for Key Stage 2).

Dance Club, January 2018

Our new dance club, run by Mia, began this week.  Nearly half the school’s pupils took part, learning different ways of moving around the space and finally putting together a short routine.  It was very energetic and lots of fun.

Fizz Pop Science is a Blast! January 2018

At our first Fizz Pop Science Club this year, we were detectives and had to work out who stole the missing biscuits.  We printed our fingerprints on a piece of paper and then looked at the different types: the loop, whorl and arch.  Having done that, we tested the reactions of types of ink when placed in water.  The last test we ran was seeing how each powder reacted when mixed with vinegar.  We had lots of fun being detectives.

Key Stage 2 Tennis Lessons, January 2018

The Key Stage 2 pupils have begun a series of tennis lessons given by tennis coach, Tim Brearly, this half-term.  He will be working with the children to develop their tennis skills, on the refurbished courts at Christow.  Despite the rather chilly weather, the children thoroughly enjoyed their first lesson.
