SWUNK visit Doddi! October 2016

The funk and swing band, SWUNK, from Exeter School, came into school to play some fantastic tunes to the whole school, and some of the Doddi pupils were invited to play and sing along too.  The six members of the band are all sixth formers and they introduced each of their instruments, blending them together to make some great music.  Their teacher, Peter Tamblyn, also told the children how jazz is constructed like a train and they then counted through the journey using their fingers and feet!!  What a great afternoon!

Library Makeover, October 2016

Carolyn Kennett, from the Library Service, came into school to work with the librarians and members of the Super Readers Club to give the library a face-lift.  She helped them sort through the books and showed them how to label those non-fiction books without numbers.  Come along and visit our fantastic library!

Sports Club

Sports Club is run for the KS2 children on a Thursday afternoon from 3.30 to 4.30pm.  It is run by PE consultant, Tim Flint, who has a keen interest in introducing the pupils to a wide range of sports - for example, the game of ultimate Frisbee.  He alters the sports offered on a half-termly basis to appeal to a wide spectrum of our pupils.  There is no charge for this club.

Mini Crickets

Class One have been really lucky to experience cricket lessons with Scott Chappell from the Devon Cricket Association.  Not only have the children been exposed to cricket from a passionate and experienced player but it has raised their interest in the sport, honed their cricketing skills, (throwing, catching, batting and fielding), but they have also been brilliant at working as part of a team.  It was a real pleasure to watch the older children support the younger children.

Hot Chocolate, Mayan Style! September 2016

The first project for the KS2 children this year is all about Mayan Culture.  The Mayans loved their chocolate, but it was not like the chocolate that we enjoy today.  They made their hot chocolate with water and chilli!  The children tried this version with varying outcomes, as you can see from the photographs!

Super Readers Club, September 2016

During the first School Council meeting, the children decided to form two reading clubs: one for KS1 and the other for KS2.  They have very quickly organised these with the younger children enjoying some books read by Emilia and the older children working with Lisa, our fantastic school cook, choosing the first book that they will share.  The photo shows the older children's first meeting in the school library.

Fire Service Visit, September 2016

The Fire Service came into school to work with all the pupils.  They told the children about the role of the Fire Service and the many jobs that fire fighters do.  They also taught the children about how to make an emergency plan for their home, what to do if someone's clothes were set alight and how to call the emergency services.  It was a very informative visit.

Castle Research Competion Winners, September 2016

The Key Stage 2 children were set a challenge to find out all about the castle of their house and to write an interesting report about it.  Three girls from Class 3 wrote fascinating pieces about the buildings and these are now displayed in the entrance hall.  The photograph shows the girls with their prizes.  Well done to our three masterly writers.
