Playground Charter, January 2014

The children have been busy thinking about what things make playtimes fun and enjoyable.  They decided that having good play equipment was important but that how everyone treated one another was the most important thing of all.  The Key Stage 2 children made a display of Doddi children in their perfect playground including speech bubbles to show how people were interacting with one another.  They then used all these ideas to make the Doddi playground charter outlining what both children and adults could do to make playtimes happy.

Fizz Pop Science Club, January 2014

Fizz Pop Science Club, led by Amazing Alice, has now begun and will run for the first six weeks of the Spring Term.  The first session was all about engineering and the children built their own vertical marble runs using gulleys and wheels to direct the marbles.  They also made horizontal marble runs which incorporated tiny trampolines to direct their marble onto a scoring area.

Christmas Celebrations, December 2013

The children had a fabulous time beginning their Christmas celebrations before the end of term.  They enjoyed the most wonderful Christmas lunch prepared by our very own Mrs Wylie who really did us proud with home-cooked food of the most delicious kind!  They also enjoyed their Christmas parties with lots of silly party games to get them into the spirit of Christmas (as if they need any help!)

We also said a fond farewell to Heather who has worked at the school for the last ten years as an LSA.  Goodbye Heather - we will miss you!

Christmas Nativity Play, December 2013

The children delighted family and friends with their special Christmas production of Stable Manners - a nativity story with a twist introducing three rather selfish animals who eventually realise what the real message of Christmas is.  The children acted and sang fabulously and everyone had a great time - it would have been a sell-out three times over.

Nelson Mandela Assembly, December 2013

Class 3 wanted to give an assembly about Nelson Mandela when they heard of his death because they felt he was such an important figure in the fight for rights.  They researched into his life and made a powerpoint about it which they presented to the school and invited parents and governors.  They also sang the Labi Siffri song 'Something inside so Strong' which tells of the long journey on the road to rights for all in South Africa.

Mr Benn at the Northcott Theatre

On Friday we went on the minibus to the Northcott Theatre to see Mr Benn.  We were able to dress up as our favourite Mr benn character which was great fun, even the teachers dressed up!  When we arrived at the theatre we spotted the artwork that we created as part of the production, it made us feel very proud.  The performance was amazing and very funny.  We really liked the sea monster in the story of the diver and the magic tricks they performed.

Fizz Pop Assembly, December 2013

'Amazing' Alice from Fizz Pop Science, came into school to amaze the children with some exciting experiments all about air.  We found out that you could fill a 2 metre long fabric tube with one breath of air and that you can blow smoke rings using a dustbin!  For all those children who want to experience even more incredible science feats, Amazing Alice will be running a science club on Monday afternoons after Christmas.

Mancala Board Making, December 2013

In the UN Conventions on the Rights of the Child, Article 31 states that children have the right to relax and play.  In Key Stage 2, we have been learning about the sorts of games that children play in Malawi and other African countries.  One of these games is mancala, a game played with a special board and 48 counters.  We decided that we would try and make our own mancala games from card and tape and see just how successful they were.  As you can see from these photographs, they games were well designed and colourful - they were also great fun to play with!
