Doddi children learning about the Jewish Faith

We were visited by Robyn who is a Rabbi at the local Synagogue, (unfortunatley we were unable to visit due to building works).  Robyn talked to the children about Judaism andin particular the Friday night festival of Shabbat.  She talked to the children about the rituals followed and showed the children the items needed for Shabat, candles to remember the creation; wine to remember freedom and bread which is traditionally eaten.

Fire-Fighters Visit Doddi, June 2013

We were visited by Maxine and Carol from the Fire Service who came in to school to talk to the children about fire safety.  They showed the children the uniform that fire-fighters wear and we went on a virtual fire-engine ride through the streets.  The children learnt that 999 should be dialed only in an emergency and that if you find yourself on fire you should 'stop, drop and roll'.

Silkie Sue and her chicks visit Class One

Class One had a visit from Silkie Sue and her chicks to support our topic on farming.  The children all prepared questions to ask Mrs Stone ranging from 'What did they look like when they were born?' to 'How much do they weigh?'.  The children particularly enjoyed stroking the chicks as they all thought they were incredibly cute.

Doddi Children make Life-saving Peanut Paste, June 2013

The Key Stage 2 children have been looking at food and the experiences of different children around the world during their PHSE lessons.  They looked at how children in parts of Africa suffer from malnutrition and how UNICEF help by producing a special energy food called peanut paste.  We decided that we would make our own Doddi version of peanut paste.  It was delicious!  We then made some posters and packaging to advertise our results.  You will be able to see some of these and taste our paste at the RRS Food Assembly in July.

Climbing Crazy! June 2013

The Key Stage 2 had a fabulous trip to Exeter Quay's Climbing Centre to try out their climbing wall for free!  The children worked in groups of three, each taking turns to look after one another as they climbed.  All of them showed great bravery and determination during this trip and many were able to reach the top of each climbing pitch (or very nearly the top!)  Well done one and all!

World of Country Life June 2013

Class One visited World of Country Life to support their topic on farming in the past.  The children were intrigued by the farm machinery from the past compared to modern combine harvesters and were amazed at how hard the horses had to work.  The children also enjoyed a range of other activities such as feeding the Llamas and deer, watching a falconry display, feeding the baby lambs and calves and having lots of fun on the play equipment.

Keepie-Ups, June 2013

The play-leaders, Ieva and Matty, led an assembly to tell all the children about this term's intra-school sporting competition - keepie ups!  Ieva gave a demonstration to show the children exactly what they needed to do.  The girls then ran a series of lunch-time clubs for each class so that indivudal pupils could build up their keepie-up skills.  A whole school competition will be held later in the summer term.

French Exchange Trip, June 2013

Toby, Ieva, Evita and Millie joined four Dunsford pupils and two Teign School pupils on a very exciting trip to France to stay with some French families.  Everybody really enjoyed the trip, especially the day out with the host families and the barbeque for the village.  They also liked going to the French school and noticing the differences between our school and theirs.  They were surprised to find that French children do not need to wear a uniform at school and that they still used a blackboard and had only one computer per classroom.
