Habitat Investigation at Dawlish Warren

Class One visited Dawlish Warren as an introduction to their Science Week project on Habitats.  The children visited different types of habitat, (woodland area, meadow and pond) and activities included a woodland bug hunt, an unnatural bug hunt and a meadow insect sweep and pond dipping.  After such a fantastic and busy morning the children had a picnic lunch and play on the beach before returning to school.

Multi-Cultural Day at Teign School, May 2013

The Multi-Cultural Day at Teign School is the highlight of the school calendar, where all the local schools gather together to share their work about the different countries they have been studying.  The primary schools have the opportunity to show off their written and art work on their own display stands and also to perform dances and songs that they have been working on too.  This year, here at Doddi, we have been learning about Japan.

Doddi children learn to write Japanese, May 2013

As part of their Japan topic, the children in Key Stage 2 learnt about Japanese writing.  We found out that children in Japan have to learn over 2,000 special picture characters by the time they leave primary school.  We also discovered that Japanese children have special calligraphy lessons where they learn how to form each character in the correct way.  Then, it was our turn to have a go at making some of these characters using a brush and watercolour paints.  We found that it was very tricky!

Celebrations! May 2013

All the children in Key Stage 2, but especially the Year 6s, have worked incredibly hard this week doing their SATs tests.  As a special treat, we went to see an amazing performance of 'I was a Rat', adapted from the book of the same name by Philip Pullman, at the Northcott Theatre.  The play was performed by just eight actors who took on all the roles wearing incredible costumes to help tell the story.  It was very atmospheric but also funny and a real treat for everyone.  When we got back to school, we also had our obligatory end of SATs ice-creams!!

Recycled Greenhouse

This morning the children have made a start on constructing our plastic bottle greenhouse.  The children have worked sensibly and co-operatively to clean, remove labels, cut off the bottoms of the bottles and thread them onto bamboo canes.  Once the base of the greenhouse is in place these sticks of plastic bottles will be secured in place to create the walls of the greenhouse.  Thank you to all those who collected 2 litre bottles for us but we still need more!  The greenhouse requires approximately 1,500 bottles in total!

Kitchen Garden

Class One have once again participated in a growing competition sponsored by Fermoy's Garden Centre.  The brief this year was to grow food in recycled containers.  Class One decided to go along the theme of planting herbs so we called our exhibit 'Kitchen Garden'.   The children even made a welsh dresser complete with bunting to display their crops on.  Unfortunately the weather has prevented some of our crops from growing as well as we hoped but the children all had fun!  The exhibit is on display at the Devon County Show along with some other imag

Egg Helmet Initiative

Class One have been learning about how important it is to protect their heads when out and about on their bikes.  The children learnt about why their brains were precious by watching a short video called 'Jonny and the Rocket'.  The children then compared their heads to an egg!  They predicted what would happen if an egg was dropped, discussed how they could protect the egg and finally predicted whether the egg would still smash when it was protected my a special egg helmet.  This was a great way for the children to learn a very important lesson about wearin
